The middle aged father sat in the congregation listening to another sermon, praying, wanting to believe there would be a message of hope. He has grown desperate when looking at the wreckage of sin in the life of his son, now turned 19. The abuse of alcohol, the increasing smoking habit and the justification of gambling are causing havoc in the young man’s life. There is no sense of reason, there appears to be no spiritual convictions – in fact God is now denied by the lad completely. Oh – how will this all end?
And so the Father waited and listened. The preacher turned up the story of Zechariah entering the temple. He had a burden. His wife had never been able to bare a child, a terrible shame for a Jewish couple in these times. But Zechariah had waited and he had prayed for a son and he had almost given up hope. Until this day – when he met with an angel who produced the most astonishing news that he ever heard – you will have a son. Not only would Zechariah’s prayer be answered but the angel declared that the child born would be “great”. The preacher went onto explain how the old man’s prayers would be answered in an even greater fashion than he ever could have anticipated.
Sitting, listening – the heart broken Father felt a sense of comfort and warmth. God hears. God answers. He cares! He will do greater things with my boy than I ever thought possible.
Will you join with me in praying the prodigals home?
