Is Jesus our Friend when Life Goes Wrong?

“Where were you? Why were you not a friend to one of your children. Why did you stand back and allow this situation to take place?”


We often sing Joseph Scriven’s words and quote them in prayer:

“What a Friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer”

Inspiring words. Comforting words.

Or are they?

These words are easy to appreciate when there no problems.

When we face grief and pain and struggle to comprehend the imponderables we need these words. Yet we must meet the challenge they present, if we are to receive their comfort.

When I lost a Christian friend to depression and suicide I asked God;
